SR Inc selects HCSC as Member of the Sustainable Business & Enterprise Roundtable

Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), a Mutual Legal Reserve Company and an Independent Licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, is the largest customer-owned health insurer in the United States and fourth largest overall, operating through its Blue Cross and Blue Shield® Plans in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. HCSC affiliates and subsidiaries such as Dearborn National, TMG Health and Medecision, offer group life, disability, and dental solutions, as well as a range of other individual solutions. The company, founded in 1936, serves nearly 16 million members across five states and employs nearly 23,000 people in over 60 local offices.

In keeping with its corporate citizenship core value, Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC) has implemented several programs and systems over the years that demonstrate a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. In order to help the environment, the company:

  • Ensures high-energy efficiency by using building automation technology for building heating, air conditioning, and lighting (along with high-efficiency fluorescent light bulbs)
  • Recycles used fluorescent light bulbs, wood shipping pallets, carpet tiles, batteries, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles
  • Uses green cleaning products, green roof technology, and green storm water management systems
  • Has a paper recycling program and a program to save birds and stop them from crashing into its buildings
  • Communicates annual environmental statistics to show employees that their contribution really counts

In addition, HCSC’s members save nearly 90 trees – or 7 million pieces of paper – each year by choosing to receive electronic EOBs (Explanation of Benefits).
